Weld County Commissioners: Buck is fiscally responsible

  • News Article

Allison Sherry, The Denver Post: The Weld County Commissioners wrote a letter to one of GOP Senate candidate Jane Norton's biggest supporters Wednesday, saying the campaign's allegations that Ken Buck has increased spending by 50 percent at his Weld District Attorney Office was wrong.

The letter to Mesa County Commissioner Janet Rowland pointed out that Buck did increase spending from 2005 to 2009 by 30 percent because the office expanded district and county courtrooms. In that same time, population of Weld County increased by 41 percent and crime in Weld County has decreased by 50 percent, the letter said.

Commissioner Rowland is a staunch Norton supporter. She has worked on Norton's behalf to win over tea party groups statewide.

The letter sent today points out that the Mesa County District Attorney's budget -- which Rowland votes on as commissioner -- increased by 32 percent over the same four-year period.

'The Weld County Commissioners are impressed with the return on investment we have made in our District Attorney's Office and would not approve budget increases if we didn't believe it was to the benefit of our county,' the letter said.
