Ken Buck releases “Ken Cares” video featuring victim he helped in 2008
/DENVER, CO: Ken Buck unveiled a two-minute video entitled, “Ken Cares: Stephanie’s Story.” The video, posted on both the campaign website, and on YouTube, features a young woman named Stephanie who was abused and threatened by her then-husband.
In 2008, Stephanie fled her home in Montana after her husband, a frequent abuser and molester, threatened to murder her. With two young children in tow, she returned to her parent’s home in Colorado. That is when she connected with Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck.
“Ken helped me get through a rough time in my life,” said Stephanie, who is now a nurse in Greeley. “I don’t know where I would be if it weren’t for Ken’s work. He helped me to see that I have a voice and I shouldn’t be afraid to use it.”
In the video, Buck also points out that after Stephanie’s case, he learned that a major loophole in the law allowed perpetrators like Stephanie’s husband to continue contacting the children.
Buck, Stephanie, and even her daughter went to the state legislature so that they could help close the loophole. The bill was signed into law in 2011.
“As long as I’m alive I will continue to fight to protect my daughter—and I want to help everyone’s children,” she continued. “I would like to help Ken get elected so that he will continue to push for the protection of victims at the national level.”
“Ken helped me get through a rough time in my life,” said Stephanie, who is now a nurse in Greeley. “He was an integral part of our move from victims to survivors and ultimately to empowered advocates for all victims across the state. In the video, Buck also points out that after Stephanie’s case, he learned that a major loophole in the law allowed perpetrators like Stephanie’s husband to continue contacting the children. Buck, Stephanie, and even her daughter went to the state legislature so that they could help close the loophole.
“As long as I’m alive I will continue to fight to protect my daughter and I want to continue to fight for everyone else’s daughters too,” she continued. “It is important to my family and should be to yours to put someone into office who will continue to be a champion for the abused by making it clear on a national level that violence and intimidation will not be tolerated . Ken is that someone.”
